How to batch rename files on Mac

Drag and drop, combinable rules, preview first

The simplest method: SeventyRename

Install SeventyRename, drop your files into the window (drag and drop, or the "Choose files…" button), then set one or several rules: search/replace, prefix, suffix (before the extension), automatic numbering, lowercase. A Before / After table shows the exact result before anything is written to disk, conflicts (duplicates, name already taken) show in red, and one click on "Rename" applies the whole batch at once.

Download the free SeventyRename trial (7 days, macOS 13+).

Why not rename one by one in Finder

Rules that combine

Search/replace part of the name, add a prefix ("trip-"), a suffix before the extension, number instead of the name (starting number and digit padding adjustable), lowercase everything: each rule can be used alone or combined with the others, the Before / After table updates live.

Made a mistake? Undo it

After applying a batch, the "Undo last batch" button restores every file to its original name, in reverse order. This safety net stays available as long as you haven't started a new batch.
